01
Roller, solar, and cellular shades
Support roller or solar fabric while using a soft cloth or low-suction tool; do not crease, scrub, or soak it. Cellular shades can be dusted along the pleats with care. Avoid collapsing cells or drawing moisture into internal construction. Test any permitted spot-cleaning method in an inconspicuous area.
02
Roman and woven shades
Use gentle vacuuming with a clean upholstery attachment where allowed, working with folds or weave. Natural fibers can react to moisture and abrasion; lined Romans may combine materials with different care limits. Do not assume removable-looking fabric is washable.
03
Wood, faux wood, aluminum, and shutters
Close slats or louvers and dust in sections, then reverse direction. Keep natural wood nearly dry and follow finish guidance. Faux wood, aluminum, and suitable composite shutters may allow a lightly damp cloth, but moisture should not enter cords, motors, rails, or hinges. Dry promptly.
04
Protect operation while cleaning
Use a stable approach for high windows rather than pulling on fabric or controls. Do not spray cleaner directly onto a treatment. Inspect brackets, cords, wands, batteries, and fabric alignment without dismantling proprietary hardware. Stop if movement feels different after cleaning.
Decision table
Compare the practical tradeoffs.
| Material | Routine care | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Roller/solar fabric | Soft dusting or allowed spot care | Scrubbing, creasing, saturation |
| Cellular | Low suction along pleats | Crushing cells or internal moisture |
| Roman/woven | Gentle vacuuming if permitted | Assuming fabric is washable |
| Natural wood | Dry or barely damp care per finish | Excess water and household sprays |
| Faux wood/aluminum/composite | Soft cloth; limited damp care if allowed | Soaking controls or headrails |
Use the least moisture and pressure that accomplishes the task, and let the specific material instructions overrule general advice.
